IBM's Stretch Project
In 1956,many scientist from IBM decided to build the worlds fastest computer as in the super computer.After long 5 years they gave IBM 7030 or Stretch the first super computer and it was given to Los Alamis National Labortary in 1961.The machine was developed to handle half million instrucions per second.This computer was the world super computertill 1964.But instead of this the project was a failure.IBM originally promised to built a computer which will be like hundred times faster than present one but it failed to meets its requirement as it managed only thirty to forty percent faster.Hence the goal was not reached,for this IBM salshed the price of the supercomputer to $7.8 million as the original quotaion was estimated to be $14 million.After this setbaack IBM stop manufacturing only nine models were built.
Though the project was considered a failure but it also helped to built better computer in the future.So it is them that they say Even if the didnt meet ht egoals but they managed to salvage something from the debris.
