Discussion Question
This week’s discussion focuses on the concept of TCP/IP. The TCP/IP suite is the most popular set of network protocols used today. The popularity of IPv4 is because of the robust protocols and features in the TCP/IP suite and IP is a routable protocol. This allows different intranets to connect into one large Internet. In this discussion forum we will focus on IPv6 and the benefits of this new protocol standard. Please respond to all of the following prompts after completing this week’s reading assignments:
In your opinion, what are two of the most important features of IPv6? Explain your selections.
June 6, 2012 is the World IPv6 Launch date. Go to: http://www.worldipv6launch.org/ (Links to an external site.) and look around the website for interesting details about IPv6. In your opinion, how do you think the implementation to IPv6 is going? When do you think more companies will embrace IPv6?
One site to see if you are ready for IPv6 is: http://test-ipv6.com/ (Links to an external site.) Go to a website and report if you are ready for IPv6. How do you feel about the results of the test?
Explanation / Answer
1.In your opinion, what are two of the most important features of IPv6? Explain your selections.
Answer:Two important features of IPv6 are:
A.Larger Address Space
As there Billions of system in the world we require billions of IP address. In IPv4 32bit address
is used and in IPv6 128bit Hexadecimal Address is used. It has 8 groups of four letters and numbers
separated by colons so it looks like this: 2001:db8:1f70:999:de8:7648:6e8.
Using IPv6 1564 addresses can be allocated to every square meter of this earth.
Hence It provide very Large address space.
B.End-to-End Connectivity
Every System has unique IP address.
If IPv6 is implemented every host can directly reach other hosts on the Internet.
In todays's world applications emerged require peer-to-peer connectivity for
multi-player online games,video conferencing,file sharing and VoIP.
Peer to peer applications demand end to end connections between unique IP address.
Hence it will provide End-to End Connectivity.
2.In your opinion, how do you think the implementation to IPv6 is going? When do you think more companies will embrace IPv6?
Answer: As it Expensive to change all routers and switches configured with IPv4.It will be bit tough to the companies to implement all of sudden. It may take some time. There will be Compatibility issue as IPv6 does'nt provide any single
backward compatibility. It can cause critical failure. As it will required operator to run both IPv4 and IPv6 concurrently which will result into higher maintenance cost. Nowaday's companies like google receieves 5-6% of total traffic through IPv6 which is meagre. But as whole world adopt the technology more companies will embraces for IPv6.
3.How do you feel about the results of the test?
Answer: Test results are absolutely fabulous, Everything it has in its reach.IPv4,IPv6 Address and etc.
I think cmpanies should accept IPv6 as early as possible which is more secure and reliable then IPv4.
