Question
COURSE NAME - ENG 211 ( BUSINESS COMMUNICATION)
Q 1.) Topic - Lost in Translation ( Discussion )
Two years ago I traveled to Poland with some friends and family and we stayed with a host family. They spoke little English and all we knew how to say in Polish was yes, ‘tak’. I remember one morning for breakfast our host mother was asking us how our sleep was, and because we didn’t know what she was saying, one of my friends kept repeating “tak” over and over. It was a very confusing breakfast. We used an English to Polish book for phrases to try and have a conversation, but we were unable to pronounce words properly so we just ended up using gestures and pointing at things. It was a struggle to communicate with them, but when we did understand each other it was a huge win. The next time I travel, I’ll make sure that I learn more then just their word for yes.

As per the given scenario, it is always a plus point to know the language where we are going to visit. But, we as people always have non-verbal communication to our side that is mostly common in different parts of the world. This is the non-verbal communication used by these people in the country of Poland that helped the out. It is the way our civilization grew when different groups of people living in different parts of the world interacted when they met each other. It develops strong bonding between the people belonging to different cultural and language background. So, knowing the language of each other is always good to build quick relations, but it is the intention of cooperation, respect for each other and support that makes them friend of each other and world community grows. Here, non-verbal communication definitely helps as used by these people in Poland, despite not knowing the language of each other.
