Need help to write THE PROFILE ESSAY
Using the plan you outlined in last week's Profile Process Piece assignment, you are now ready to compose the Profile essay. Be sure to read this week's lesson and Chapter 5 in your text for more information about writing profiles, keeping these key components in mind Profiles take a specific angle that shares a significant issue, important contribution, or surprising quality of a person, place, or event with which you have first-hand experience. Profiles are not full life stories; instead, they share a fresh perspective on a larger issue. Profiles require writers to take a close look at a subject and use detail and description to bring the subject to life The subject of the Profile should focus on a local person you know, a place you have visited, or an event you have attended, meaning the subject should be a part of your local neighborhood, community, or town The audience of the Profile essay is the local community. Imagine the readers as neighbors and local community members. The best topics and angles are those that are interesting to the writer. Be sure to choose a subject that is fascinating to you and that you'd like to learn more about. Also consider that your chosen subject and the angle you choose should be of interest to your audience Outside research is not required for this essay and is discouraged. Rather, you should use your knowledge of the topic and reflect on your experiences to help develop examples for your profile. Keep i mind that all work should be original and material should not be "borrowed" from external sources. This is an opportunity for you to get feedback on your voice and style as a writer For this assignment, you will also integrate an APA cover page. This will be your first introduction to APA format and will allow you to gain some practice presenting work in an academic context. Please download and use the APA Cover Page template to create your cover page by adding your information: Additional requirements include: two to three double-spaced pages, not including the title page typed and submitted in Microsoft Word 2010 (.docx) format and . 12-point font, 1 inch margins, Times or Times new Roman styleExplanation / Answer
How many of you ever wondered spirituality is not your cup of tea? I am sure a significant part of a significant number of you would. I have a counter question to you. What is Spirituality according to you? If you believe it is running away from the real world to find peace in the Himalayas, then no wonder spirituality is not your cup of delicious tea. The paradox is that it can and is the ambrosia of life because spirituality is not running away.
In fact Spirituality is living in the world and facing the challenges head on with a smile on the face. It goes then without saying that even the youth need this skill. But the unfortunate scenario is that the youth think spirituality is for the old! It is in this context that the contribution of Khurshed Batliwala, an IIT grad and my Art of Living teacher bears significant relevance and traction.
He has inspired millions of youth across the world particularly in his home country. India. Under the guidance of his guru Sri Sri Ravishankar, he has made significant strides in uplifting the youth. When someone asked him why he chose being an ‘Art of Living’ teacher, with his unique sense of humour he says “I thought I will teach people meditation and make them happy rather than teach them Mathematics and make them miserable”. He is the director of the Youth wing of the Art of Living, where the YES! + (Youth Empowerment Skills) workshop for people in the age group of 18 and 35 are trained. His training have reached the most prestigious of institutions like Harvard, IITs, NIT, and Stanford etc.
His talk on ‘The technology of spirituality’ steered me clear of all doubts on the benefits of Spirituality to a student. Here he talks of how great mathematicians, scientists and poets alike had a spiritual outlook to life with meditation being an integral part of everyone’s daily regimen in India. So much so that it evoked a sense of awe in Lord Mountbatten when he witnessed not a single beggar in India.4
This contribution by Bawa (as he is fondly referred to as, for Bawa in Parsi means Brother) has brought about a significant change in the masses and particularly the Youth to take up various social issues in order to tackle them with the energy and enthusiasm obtained by practicing Spiritual techniques such as SKY, Yoga, Pranayam, and meditation. I am sure with India being the youngest country today, his contribution is no mean an achievement in the larger socio-economic scheme of things.
