Question

Perhaps it has occured to you that we could tap Earth's magnetic field to generate energy. One way to do this would be to spin a metal loop about an axis perpendicular to Earth's magnetic field. Suppose that the metal loop is a square that is 45 cm on each side and that we want to generate an electric potential in the loop of amplitude 120 V ata a place where earths magnetic field is 0.5x10^-4. At what angulare speed (in rev/s) would we ahve to spin the coil? Does this appear to be a feasible method to extract energy from earths magnetic field?

Explanation / Answer

Area

A=L^2= 0.45^2 =0.2025 m^2

Maximum induced emf

Emax=NBAW

W=Emax/NBA

W=120/1*(0.5*10^-4)*0.2025

W=11,851,851.85 rad/s

in rev/s

W=11851851.85/2pi

W=1,886.280.8 rev/s
