Question

Performing a Gas-Liquid Chromatography lab... In this experiment, we will use GLC to identify and an assigned BTEX found in a popular industrial solvent, B12-ChemTool. After the retention time of toluene has been determined, a sample of B12- ChemTool will be injected and analyzed. A calibration curve will be prepared by injecting a series of toluene standards using exactly the same injection volume for each injection. Traditional calibration (peak area versus concentration) will be compared to internal standard method in terms of precision.

..... Have a question....

Questions 1. Which would you expect to elute first CH3OH or CHCl3? Why?

Explanation / Answer

1. Chloroform should elute first in gas-liquid chromatography. Since, there is significant difference in the boiling point of two solvents the choice or role of stationary phase is less critical in the elution of solvents. Further, the lower boiling point solvents will have higher vapor pressure and hence, the shorter retention time.
