After reading the case presented in the module, write a short response to the following discussion questions and ethical decision making scenario.
1. Discussion Questions
If you were Iris, how would reply to Gloria’s question?
What, if anything, is wrong with the human resources focus depicted here? Examine the relationship between certifications and experience. Do certifications alone identify the job candidates with the most appropriate expertise and work experience?
2. Ethical Decision Making
Looking back at the opening case scenario, did the HR staff that failed to report the candidate’s conviction and parole on the “approval to hire” form commit an ethical lapse, or was it just a clerical error?
The company seems to prohibit the hiring of anyone with a felony conviction for any position. Do you think it is an ethically valid practice for a company to block the hiring of felons, or should the nature of the crime for which they were convicted be a part of the decision? Why or why not?
Explanation / Answer
1. In many cases Certifications identifies a person experience. For example, to have a certification in SAP, a person should have two years of experience. This means a certified SAP consultant atleast will have 2-3 years of experience. Similarly for management PMP certification having epperience is utmost criteria. This implies that certified candidates are experienced.
If in job description certifications are mentioned then certified candidates with experience are to be required. On the other hand we cannot conclude tht only cerified candidates have good experience because work experience gives more knowledge than doing certification.
2. The nature of the crime of a felon has to be taken in to consideration while recuriting. If the charges against the felon are violating the company rules and regulations he cannot be recurited because it affects the work environment. Ethics of a company should not be comprimised at any cost. If there is obligation to hire a felony always consult your attorney and recurit him.
