See the Q.M. In Action article attached Discuss the advantages of using probability in Quality Control. Can this help Morton International to be more competitive? Explain. Q.M. in ACTION: PRODUCT TESTING FOR QUALITY CONTROL AT MORTON INTERNATIONAL Morton Intemational is a company with basinesses in salt, household products, rocket motors, and specialty chemicals. Carstab Corporation, a subsidiary of Morton, produces a variety of specialty chemical prodacts designed to meet the unique specifications of its customers For one paticular customer, Carstab prodaced an expensive catalyst used in chemical processing Some, but not all, of the prodact produced by Carstab met the customer's specifications Carstab's customer agreed to test each lot after receiving it to determine whether the catalyst would perform the desired function Lots that did not pass the castomer's test would be returned to Carstab. Over tie, Carstab found that the customer was accepting 9/29/2015 8-13 PM ing eBook Print htp://rle go galegroup com vrle printdoc dosgIaCountType Noneles 60% of the lots and returning 40% In probability terms, each Carstab shipment to the customer bad a O 60 probability ofbeing accepted and a0.40 probabulity of being retaned. Neitber Caastab o its customer was pleased with these resuls. In an effort to imptove service, Carstab exploted the possibilaty of daplicating the customers test prior to shipment However, the high cost of the special testing equipment made that altemative infeasible Carstab's chemists then proposed a new, relatively low-cost test designed to indicate whether a lot mould pass the castomer's test The probability question of interest was: What is the probability that a lot will pass the customer's test piven that it passed the new Carstab test A sample of lots was tested under both the customer's procedure and Cantab's proposed procedure. Results were tat 55% of the lots passed Carstab's test, and 50% of the lots passed both the customer's and Caastab's test. In paobabality notation, we have A-the event the lot passes the customer's test B-the event the lot passes Carstab's test where PLB) _ 0.55 and P(dnB)-0.50 The probability information sought was the conditional probability Pid |given by PANB) 0.50 P(B) 0.55 PIA B)- -0.909 s new test, the probability that a lot would pass the customers test was 0.60. However, the new results sbowed that given that a lot passed Carstab's new test, it had a 0.900 probability of passing the customer's test. This resalt was good supporting evidence for the use of the test prior to shipment. Based on this probability analysis, the preshipment testing procedure was implemented at the company. Immediate results showed an improved level of custoner service. A few lots were sall being returned; however, the percentage was preatly reduced The customer was more satisfied and rehum shipping costs were reduced

Explanation / Answer

Hi,

The advantages of using probability in quality control are as follows:

1. Aids in error detection.

2. It provides a basis for attainable specifications.

3. Customer relationships are improved.

4. We are able to measure the efficacy of quality control operations.

5. Bottlenecks and trouble spots are taken care of.

6. Ensures a more uniform quality of production.

7. By reducing the number of rejects, it ensures better raw material utilization.

8. The costs of inspection reduce.

Yes, quality control can help Morton International to be more competitive. It would enjoy all the benefits listed above which bring about greater efficiency in operations. Also customer satisfaction is improved due to a more standardized product. So competitve advantages will be :

1. More revenue as the standardized quality of products drive up demand.

2. A greater profit margin, and the cost of raw materials reduced.
