Question
Part A is correct and Part B I got wrong. I tried 734 and 735.
Glenn Dental Clinic provides general dental care to residents of Philadelphia on a walk-in basis. The clinic has started receiving complaints from patients that the waiting time is too long and has asked you to investigate whether this problem can be solved Upon arrival, customers first receive a series of paperwork from the receptionist and fill out relevant information such as personal health records and insurance provider. The form is then handed back to a receptionist who enters the information into the computer system for the dentist to see. A dental assistant then takes an X-ray from the patient. A dentist then performs the check-up and discusses any issues with the patient.Based on conversations with staff members at the clinic, you have obtained the following information on the process It takes about 5 minutes for a customer to fill out the paperwork. Entry of information on the paperwork into the system and verification with past records takes another 3 minutes for a receptionist. There are 1 receptionists It takes 13 minutes on averagefor the dental assistant to take an X-ray. There are 5 dental assistants on shift at any moment. There are 12 dentists working at the clinic. Each check-up takes 35 minutes on average Table 1 summarizes the process data collected above Staffing (Number of Workers Processing Time (Minutes per Patient) Resources ProcesS A. Self-serve B. Assume further that the dentist gets paid $100 per hour while receptionist and dental assistant get paid S30 per hour. Instruction: Round "cost of direct labor" to 2 decimal places a. What is the labor content? 51 minutes per patient b. What is the cost of direct labor? 734.00 per patientExplanation / Answer
Labor is used for patients in following activities :
Receptionist = 3 minutes / patient
Dental assistant = 13 minutes / patient
Dentist = 35 minutes/ patient
Total labour spent per patient = 3 + 13 + 35 = 51 minutes
LABOUR CONTENT = 51 MINUTES PER PATIENT
Effective processing time at each resource per patient
= Processing time per patient / Number of workers
Thus :
Effective processing time at self service = 5 minutes / patient ( self service )
Effective processing time at receptionist = 3/1 = 3 minutes/ patient
Effective processing time at dental assistant = 13/5 = 2.6 minutes/ patient
Effective processing time at dentist = 35/12 = 2.92 minutes/ patient ( rounded to 2 decimal places )
Out of above , processing time per patient is highest at “self service” process and therefore it is the bottleneck process of the whole system. Since the processing capacity of the system is determined by the bottleneck process, processing capacity of the system is 5 minutes per patient.
Therefore , capacity of the system is = 20 patients / hour
Total hourly salary of all the staff
= $100 / dentist x 12 dentists + $30 / per person x ( 1 receptionist + 5 dental assistant)
= $1200 + $180
= $1380
Therefore, cost of direct labour = $1380 / 20 = $69 PER PATIENT
COST OF DIRECT LABOUR = $69 PER PATIENT
LABOUR CONTENT = 51 MINUTES PER PATIENT
