1.Once each person in the group decided their order, we asked each to have reason for top 10 as there could be several common and several not so common sports in that.
The reasons which each persons came up were different,
My idea was what i like to watch or get involved in.
Others had:
2. First we asked what are the top 10 sports for each person, and there were several sport which did not feature on any persons list of 10, (We take 10 as there might be overlap) so we just ignore them, But then we narrowed it done by a scoring.
So, we asked every one to speak the rank and check which sport has how much weight. Which is the ranking each person has given, in that manner we just list all the sports. So for example
Football: (1+2+1+2+2+1+1) = 10 (Total score of 10)
Soccer: (1+1+3+1+1+2+2) = 11 (So total score of 11)
Hence Football has higher average rank than soccer.
We identified 5 sports as per the priority order. And then there were few ones which were very close we tried to see if every body agrees to this rank.
We asked if they think the rank was correct. Except for 1 case where the score was very close we had 2 people ask it to be changed and that was legitimate as 4th and 5th were having a bit of random ranking as some had ignored the list after the top 3.
So we changed it.
3.
I learnt, that getting to a consensus is not easy, but if we approach in an organized way and try to put quantitative approach it can be easily reached and can be explained better to all, and people agree quicker. Qualitative features are hard to justify as everyone has different opinions.
4.
People are reasonable, only they need to be understood well.
Everybody loves sports for a different reason, we can not impose our point of view on others. Its better to go democratically and amicably
