Explanation / Answer
The business sector generally possess two typed of organizations namely the product based organizations and the service based organizations. The basic difference lies the type of end product that they manufacture and from the name itself we can make out that they are product and service. The product based industry is the primary sector and the independent industry which actually manufactures the finished products using the raw materials, on the other hand the service industry is generally the secondary sector of industry which is dependent on the product industry because the service industry provides service to the products that are being manufactured. So we can understand the basic difference in the business structure in the two sectors too.
There are some major difference in characteristics which are visible in both the industries and the most important of them is that the service that is purchased cannot be judged before the purchase because the service cannot be perceived but in the case of products this is not the case as the products are tangible and can be perceived. The production process is different because in case of products, they production is the very first step which is followed by sale but in case of services the process is totally different because the very first step is sale and after that production starts. The quality of the service generally varies a lot depending upon the provider, in case of products also this is true but the limit of variance is less in comparison to services. There is a provision for storing products at least to some extent but in the case of services this is not at all possible it cannot be stored for future use.
Technology has had a huge impact in the way of doing business and it is different from what it was few years back. If we look at any service provider for example and internet service provider we will see that the process has become convenient to a great extent. If we need to contact them we can call them, drop an email or also chat with them so that the issue gets resolved as soon as possible. Customer service today has changed a lot because organizations focus on this aspect largely and because of competition it is one of the major important aspect that needs to be taken care. The way of serving customers have also changed and is completely different because the organization maintains a customer database which contains all the details of the customers including some of their personal details too, Customer Relationship Management (CRM) is also a toll that has helped tracking down customers and helping organizations do the same.
