Assignment #1.
Online Word document submission is required. Students are encouraged to utilize Visio for graphical representations.
Question 1. (100 Points, a through e: 20 points each)
Consider the machine shop provided in Figure 1. The shop contains two milling machines, one injection press, and one quality control operator. Two types of parts enter the machine shop. For this system:
Figure 1: Schematic of the Machine Shop
Product 1 parts require milling, injection, and quality control in sequence. Product 2 parts require only milling and quality control, in this order. The frequency of arrival and the time to be routed to the milling area are deterministic for both types of parts.
a.) Specify the question(s) to be investigated by the study.
b.) Identify decision and uncontrollable variables, specify constraints on decision variables
c.) Define measures for the system performance and the relationships among the variables.
d.) State any pertinent assumptions that you have made about this particular system and its how it operates.
e.) For the system you have chosen, suggest some appropriate methods of data collection and briefly note their benefits and drawbacks. Determine and justify a data collection methodology and describe how you would execute the process. (suggest multiple methods of data collection)

Answer:
a.) Specify the question(s) to be investigated by the study.
2. Time used for manufacturing part 1 for milling, injection, quality control each?
3. Time required manufacturing part 2 for milling and quality control each?
4. Cooling time required by each machine during manufacturing
5. Process of part handling and transfer from one machine to another
6. The expected rejection rate per day
7. The raw material input required
8. The lead times to ensure continuous supply
9. Positioning of machines to maximize production
10. Which has a higher order requirement?
11. Trained manpower required and their attendance
12. Any back up plans are in place for manpower shortages
13. Upgradation of manpower required from time to time
14. Machine down time if any for maintenance
15. Time taken for technician to come and repair the machine
16. Any back up available in case of machine down time
17. Annual maintenance and calibration of machines with the necessary charts indicating the same
18. Process clear to all manpower and regular up gradation training of manpower
b.) Identify decision and uncontrollable variables, specify constraints on decision variables:
c.) Define measures for the system performance and the relationships among the variables.
d.) State any pertinent assumptions that you have made about this particular system and its how it operates.
e.) For the system you have chosen, suggest some appropriate methods of data collection and briefly note their benefits and drawbacks. Determine and justify a data collection methodology and describe how you would execute the process. (suggest multiple methods of data collection)
1. Face to face: This is the best method according to me by observation and interviewing: This gives perfect information only drawback being lack in correct communication between interviewer and interviewee. Some aspects might not be discussed or held back. The speaker might not divulge important information
2. Questionnaire Method: This is also a good method as questions will be precise and specific. Disadvantage being the response may be minimal and not satisfy need of the data collection.
3. Document Review: It’s a relatively inexpensive way of data collection, and can be done quietly. Disadvanatge is lack of accurate information, the documents reviewed might be time consuming.
