Explanation / Answer
What is the impact of individual characteristics on behavior?
Workplace behavior is a pattern of action by the employees of an organization that directly or indirectly impacts organizational effectiveness. Among them, performance behaviors are the work-related behaviors the organization expects the individual to display in order to fulfill the psychological contract - people’s expectations about what they will give to the organization and what they will get in return. In order to ensure a proper adherence to such psychological contract, it is important that organizations find an optimal person-job fit. But this becomes a complicated process due to the existence of individual characteristics which are defined by the Personality (e.g. he Big-five traits), Attitude (the emotion, knowledge, and intended behaviors), and Perception (selective perception, stereotyping) of a person.
How do values affect behaviors, and what impact does culture have on our value system?
Culture is defined as the set of shared values which helps the individuals understand what is acceptable and what is not in a group, organizational, or societal settings. Often these shared values are taken for granted. For example, a Japanese culture will never allow a person to say a direct 'No' to anybody under any circumstances. Instead, the person will always haggle around the point and show his/ her non-confidence in a different manner. This can be expected to be a shared value in the organizational settings. These value will differ completely in a US-based organization where people are more assertive in saying 'Yes' or 'No'. So, this cultural impact on the value system impacts the behaviors of a person in the workplace.
How do emotional intelligence and general intelligence affect leadership? What role does creativity play in leadership?
First, consider Emotional Intelligence (EQ). EQ is the extent to which people are self-aware, can manage their emotions, can motivate themselves, express empathy for others, and possess social skills. Leadership generally is about a high level of interpersonal relationships with the followers and peers. Preliminary research has suggested that people having high EQ are more successful in jobs where interpersonal relationships and that involve influencing or directing the work of others (i.e. leadership). When it comes to general intelligence, it is considered one of the traits required for leadership. A leader’s intelligence and experience play a major role in enabling him/ her to cope with various levels of stress that characterize any particular situation. Note that though EQ is considered a skill that can be learned, general intelligence is known as a trait.
Describe the personality traits and their implications for leadership. In your opinion (or based on your experience), do certain characteristics and traits have a greater impact than others on a person's leadership style?
The trait approach to leadership has its foundation on some stable and enduring personality traits of a person which differentiate him/ her as a leader from others. The earlier studies note such traits as include intelligence, dominance, self-confidence, energy, activity, and task-relevant knowledge. But the more recent trait theorists have mentioned increasingly more traits required for leadership. Traits and characteristics are some things that cannot be overlooked when we discuss the leadership theory. The idea is to manage the development of such traits in the leaders leading organizations. There are two implications of trait theory on an organization - first, is how the organization is modifying its selection process for individual leadership positions i.e. to include people who have particular traits for leadership and second, how the internal developmental plan ensures that some traits (e.g. EQ) can be developed.
