) For your first topic in this conference I would like for you to briefly review either your personal experiences and/or the financial literature to identify and present a description of one actual capital project/product success and the reasons attributed to the success.

In your response please provide financial information regarding the project (what is available): initial outlay, projected cash flows, final dollar profit.

Remember this is a one to two paragraph exercise - do not go overboard - a few hours research and summation is all that’s required. I am interested only in your short, concise description of the project and the major reasons you believe it was successful.

About a year ago, my office completely changed all of the computers and technology. As the project manager, I needed to assess which was the most economic, as well as the least disruptive, path to take. With the increase of cyberattacks, the financial industry has put many requirements on the machines (computers, iPads, cell phones, etc.) to ensure that the personal information of our clients are protected to the best of our ability.

If we decided to us PC computers, we would have to add encryption to each device and all of the programs that held client information on the devices, add additional firewalls, hire an IT firm to be able to maintain our technology, and hire a cybersecurity focused IT firm that would make sure that we were as secure as possible. The additional requirements that need to be purchased were in addition to the physical machines (computers, networks, etc.) that need to be purchased. While it would be an expensive venture, this would be the easier path. There would not be a learning curve for our employees and all of the systems are compatible with PC.

The alternative would be to go with Mac computers. Since no one in the office had used a Mac computer before, there was going to be a learning curve which caused a lot of resistance. There were also a few systems that would not be able to be used on a Mac and a PC computer would also need to be maintained. But since Mac computers are not as customizable as PCs, to bring them up to what is needed per regulations would just mean adding a password.

When we looked at the numbers, the cost of the Mac computers and networks were more expensive than the PC computers and systems. But the Mac computers did not require the additional software and tech support (included in the cost of the equipment was 3 years of AppleCare – which included training). The cost of changing our entire office over to Mac was almost the exact same price as upgrading our PCs with the additional components and one year of tech support. Since there would not be any additional costs after the initial purchase, we decided to go with the Mac computers.

It has been a great decision. The efficiency we have had in our office on the Mac system has already paid for itself.

Explanation / Answer

Implementation of the Mac computers in the organisation is one of the best options that the company can have. This type of approach would reduce overall expenses for security matters as well as improve availability of creating a more efficient working environment as workflow would be benefited by understanding of the Mack oriented software. As there would be only one operating system which would be working across the organisation, overall training program would also be easy and efficient. Using my computers would also reduce the replacement part prices as all the pieces are similar understanding and troubleshooting of the problems would be much easier and applecare would also reduce the need of extra support for the PC systems which is used in your organisation has been preference. Production of the additional cost would also increase the overall benefit of the organisation as well as provide great a revenue structure which would improve efficiency as well as productivity of the organisation.
