Question
Class – a question here regarding leverage upholding organizational or individual values and ethics; Is there a critical mass of followers necessary or can one person turn the tide when it comes to acknowledging and reporting unethical behaviors or actions? (think whistle blowers in organizational or corporate scandals). Are intended outcomes or perhaps more candidly, the ‘right’ outcomes always the result of identifying and reporting unethical behavior? What tends to happen to the person acting in the most ethical way? Why? (In a 150 words or more)
Explanation / Answer
Critical mass following is not required to turn the tide, but a single person is capable of that. However, supporting that person should be carried out by many, depending on the rationality and righteousness of the issue. Whistle blower generally brings out any unethical transaction going on/ favouritism to suppliers or partner companies, share holders or investors wrong vested interests etc.
These are kind of candid actions, because it may take a little time to work on such issues in depth and bring to knowledge of vigilance department, but result may or may not go as intended, as it depends on how much the vigilance department wants to bring out such scandals among company employees and public/ media or they are going to hide it.
Depending on above scenario, the whistleblower might gain trust of other people for bringing the issue upfront or might lose the trust among the senior or favoured people involved in such scandals or frauds. The right part can be incentives and rewards, monetary or non monetary, and bad part could be lay off/ career hurdles.
