Question
Assume that you are the subcontractor responsible for a 10 kilometer long linear project in a pipeline project, which has following 5 activities: (P) Excavating trench; (Q) Laying sub-base; (R) Laying
concrete pipe; (S) Backfilling trench; (T) Compacting. The productivity rates of your labour crew for these 5 activities are 500, 150, 250, 400, 250 m/day respectively. You should allow a minimum of EITHER 1-day time buffer OR 250 meters distance buffer between individual activities. You are
required to prepare:
(d) a suitable plan based on Linear Schedule Method; and
(e) suggest your recommendation for a fast-tracked completion using planning by
blocks in linear projects.
Explanation / Answer
All answers are according to the data referred below / links given.
I am considering all the activities with Finish to Start relationship, i.e. Q can start only if the activity P have completed and so on. (eg. for backfilling trench of 250 m, 250 m sub-base should already be laid)
Q1. Suitable Plan based on Linear Schedule Method.
Ans. Clearly activity Q (Laying Sub-base) is the critical activity as because of it's slowness, other activities are getting delayed.
So, total 84 days would be taken to complete this project with Activity P starting on Day 1, Q on Day 2, R on Day 29, S on Day 44 & T on Day 45.
Suggestion: TILOS software would help in plotting the activities and getting the desired results quickly.
Q2. Recommendation for a fast-tracked completion using planning by
blocks in linear projects.
Ans. Following reccomendations would help to complete the project early:
1. Deploy more people when activity Q starts as it is the slowest, accordingly it's successor activities can be started early.
2. As activity P can be completed in 20 days, the labor for that activity can be utilised for actiity Q.
Clearly, by varying the manpower and adjusting according to the type of work can help in saving time and money to quite an extent.
