Societal marketing configuration is the concept that provides importance to welfare of the society apart from consumer needs while developing the marketing strategies. Companies adopt the strategies that would benefit the society as well as the environment and avoid any decisions that would lead to environmental destructions and resource scarcity. The long term well being of the society is also considered while trying to meet the customer needs. The examples may include the companies that consider consumer health also while developing the products. Many companies promote consumer health by using organic ingredients and without using chemicals or additives that would harm the health of the consumers. Another strategy used for social marketing is by using recycled products and reducing the damage to the environment. The excess use of plastic has led to the environmental pollution and landfills to an uncontrollable situation and some of the companies have started using organic products for packaging which will not affect the environment and also recycling the material to avoid excess pollution and landfills. But organizations would face challenges while supporting such society friendly activities. The companies are not sure about how the consumers would respond to the changes they adopt as a part of the societal marketing. for example most of the companies in the food industry provide the packaged foods in plastic containers and the consumers find it more comfortable because of the leakage protection and the convenience. When the companies start using paper instead of plastic as part of social marketing, the consumers may not accept the same. Another limitation involves the less flexibility in shaping the products as they can choose the raw materials and technologies only after considering any chances of negative side effects to the society and the environment. Apart from manufacturing they need to ensure that the distribution channels are also working as per the strategies and do not affect the intentions. Societal marketers should be careful while developing marketing messages also and the messages should be able to convey the benefits of their strategies effectively to the consumers. The failure in developing effective communication may lead to poor understanding and the consumers may not provide enough support which would make it difficult for the company to achieve the objectives and succeed in the market.
