Question

Please answer question and provide sketch for all points.

Initially, two identical springs are attached vertically to a ceiling. These springs support a copper rod in equilibrium as shown below. The rod is then connected to a battery using wires of negligible mass. The battery rests on a table (not shown). Also, an external magnetic field "B" is "turned on"; "B" is uniform in the vicinity of the rod and is directed out of the paper (toward you). The source of "B" is not shown. After just a few moments, the rod is once again in equilibrium, having risen a height Deltax. Assuming that the wires attaching the rod to the battery do not exert a force on the rod, what must be the direction of current "I" in the rod (supplied by the battery) to have made it rise? Does the current in the rod flow right to left or left to right? Explain by sketching a diagram, with B, I, and FB labeled. FB represents the magnetic force on the current-carrying rod in the external magnetic field "B".

Explanation / Answer

a) here current is moving from right to left.

direction of B is out of the page

direction of I is from right to left

direction of FB is upward
