Question
Can you please give me some key take away from this article?
Body language is so important. Even as an adult, I find myself paying close attention to the body language of the people I am around. I think it is so important to have good body language around my students, because they feed off of my energy, and I do not want to create a negative environment for them base off of the way I act towards them.
I think that there are many different things I can do to use body language as an advantage in my classroom.
-Avoid crossing my arms- crossing my arms signals students that I do not want any contact with them. It is not welcoming and can cause them to avoid interacting with me.
-Smile-I make it my goal to smile as much as possible throughout the day. When you smile, it makes you seem welcoming and positive. It also can make students feel encouraged and happy as well.
-Eye contact- I want to make eye contact with my students often. It shows them that I am truly interested in what they are saying. It also shows them that they can trust me and it helps to establish a good rapport with them.
-Pausing for a wait time- By establishing a wait time after answering a question, I convey to my students that the right answer is more important than a quick answer. It can make me seem relaxed and can also be encouragement for students to strive to find the right answer because they will not feel rushed.
-Be aware of any facial expressions I make-Our students know how we are feeling or what type of mood we are in based on our facial expressions. It is so important to try and keep positive expressions on our faces at all times. They are not oblivious to a sad face or and angry face.
My goal is to make sure that my body language is convey in a positive manner. I want to create an encouraging, happy, inspiring, and welcoming environment in my room. Body language is one way to help make this happen.
