Many governments are looking at privatization as a means of reducing the cost of government operations and acquiring better control over the level of service.

Identify an area in your own workplace that could be a candidate (or already has been) for privatization.

What are the benefits and challenges of privatizing this service?

Would you agree or disagree that the privatization of services are a help or hindrance to local government?

Explanation / Answer

I work in a governement organization which handles the road traffic via toll booths and various traffic management techniques. Even though government spent a huge amount in construction of roads, toll booths and barriers , it is not able to manage it becaue of high operational costs. Also, because of the high volume of the traffic on the road, the govenment is incurrig hugh costs to manage entire network and also being inefficient in the business.

Management of toll booths is a service which I feel can be privatized.

Help or Hinderance to local government ?

It cannot be clearly said that the privatization will help or hinder local government. It depends upon how it is being used. If the contract is made transparent with clear roles and responsibility and authority of both the government and private parties , it will definately be useful to the local government.
