Many governments are looking at privatization as a means of reducing the cost of government operations and acquiring better control over the level of service.
Identify an area in your own workplace that could be a candidate (or already has been) for privatization.
As a flight attendant in the Air Force it surprises a lot of our users that we are active duty members. We don't usually wear the typical USAF military, its a more civilian looking flight attendant uniform, so it throws some people off. I think my job could very well be contracted out to a private contractor rather than using AD members.
What are the benefits and challenges of privatizing this service?
I think there would be a lot of challenges to privatize the flight attendant career field. I’m not aware of all the rules that commercial/corporate flight attendants have but we can work very long hours and there is a waiver for just about any time limit that the party would want to break. The security clearance would also be an issue. As military members we already have a certain level of clearance and it is a lot easier to give us the higher clearance that we need than it would for a private organization. The budget and pay would also be an issue. Generally, contractors are paid a lot more than AD members would be and they almost have a mandatory amount of time off they need and set rules to their contract. AD members bend to complete the mission.
Would you agree or disagree that the privatization of services are a help or hindrance to local government?
I think it would depend on the situation. Yes I can see privatization of services could be helpful because the government has been known to have many flaws in their systems. There is a lot of dissatisfaction with how the government has been performing in some areas. At the same time I don’t know if certain standards would be met and it might cost local governments more money than they have a budget for.
Explanation / Answer
1) I agree that the flight attendent job can be contracted out to some private player because the USAF military employee can be assigned to the core jobs rather than doing the jobs which are not directly related the USAF military work.
2) Agree - SInce the private player will be concentrating on working in office hours and are profit oriented , there will be an issue of high budget requirement and long working hours . Also, the security clearances given to some officers is going to be frequent problem because of very scrict security rules in USAF military which will be followed by the private organization which are mainly efficiency oriented.
