Explanation / Answer
When a thought of CSR to create value chain for the companies, the first example which strikes is Nestle India. Punjab the state of India where Nestle launched its program to support farmers by supporting them for learning new farming techniques and to increase production of milk in villages is part of their CSR activity, which is helping farmers to increase their production and in turn helping Nestle to procure milk and other raw material from them creating value chain for themselves.
The similar kind of example which is an excellent one and highly successful is e-Choupal. It is an initiative of ITC Limited, a conglomerate in India, to link directly with rural farmers via the Internet for procurement of agricultural and aquaculture products like soybeans, wheat, coffee, and prawns. e-Choupal tackles the challenges posed by Indian agriculture, characterized by fragmented farms, weak infrastructure and the involvement of intermediaries. The programme installs computers with Internet access in rural areas of India to offer farmers up-to-date marketing and agricultural information. For instance, the famed e-Choupal initiative led by the agri-business division is a major sourcing base for the company's packaged food and FMCG business, while its social forestry programme supports the paper and paperboard business. ITC has, in the last few years, undertaken massive animal husbandry initiatives covering ten lakh milch animals which will form the base for the proposed foray into the dairy business early next year. In this way you can effectively create value chain for your own organization with the added competitive advantage over other companies to create brand equity in front of society.
When it comes to first person perspective, I think that being businessman you should think of your business profitability, but there is no harm or wrong in choosing corporate social responsibility which in return positively impact your business and help it become more profitable by creating value chain. But the only point is it should be genuine effort and intention should be good to execute CSR by understanding some sort of obligation of organization towards society in which it performs its operations / business.
