Question

Class, When looking to locate a new facility location, eventually you will need to hire people to work within that facility. Let’s use a real-world example. I manage a supplier that recently located to a remote town in Florida, surrounded by cow pastures. The company is a technology company, dependent on obtaining top talent to create new technologies to stay in business. If you were the Operations Manager at this facility, would you have chosen this location to attract top talent? Why or why not?

Explanation / Answer

As the operation manager I wouldn’t have chosen this location to attract top talent because obviously there isn’t a large population on the area and chances are that it will be extremely hard to find qualify people to work at our facility.

This kind of companies are usually located at more centric cities to attract the best possible talent, a clear example is San Francisco, all the top technology companies work there and this is why many people move to those cities looking for job opportunities.

San Fernando Valley on southern California is also popular place were startups and large technology companies establish themselves.
