Question

Bob starts off a recent team meeting with a discussion around how the experiences they are all going to go through are similar to those that occurred during the 1970’s oil embargo’s where the resources they likely need will be scarce. Little known to Bob, most of his team was not old enough during this event to understand what the context of this statement meant. In many project activities and efforts the generational diversity can be very high. Discuss how you might bridge this gap early on in a project to ensure that no messages or communications are lost due to these generational elements.

Explanation / Answer

Some of the ways to bridge this generational difference in the project are as follows.

As a project manager, one has to look into the similarities rather than the differences between the generations, who are working in the project. It is all in the mind to take the decision. It could be said that, we have a huge age difference and it is difficult for us to get along and on the contrary it could also be said that, we are having a huge age difference and we could work out different things that could suit different people.

The project manager has to recognize the change that is happening within the organization and has to communicate within the projects accordingly. You need to understand that people are always resistant to change and you need to device strategies accordingly.

You need to recognize the experience of the older generation people. They are tried and tested people in the organization. You also cannot be into the assumption that the older people think that always the older is the better. There are also older people who want to turn into the newer technology.

Always dont think that the new technology is always good. It could backfire at sometimes.

It is the duty of the project manager to develop the curiosity among the team members towards the unknown things in the project. This will enhance the team members to explore on the newer things in the organization for the development of oneself and for the team as well.

These are above steps that could be taken to bridge the gap between the younger generation and the older generation.
