Question
Students are to assume that they are a human resource manager for a service organization. The boss would like the human resource manager to communicate to employees the value of the benefits offered to them, but the boss wants the information manipulated so that it looks better than it really is. The boss figures that these are the potential costs that could be incurred for everyone and that the company should get credit for being generous, although many employees do not take full advantage of all benefits.
1. What do you think most managers would do? What would you do?
Explanation / Answer
1.
Most managers would do as instructed by their boss for two reasons. One is because they have a fear of retaliatory action, if they don’t do so. And second is because they think it doesn’t cause any harm to employees and particularly to themselves by manipulating and exaggerating the values benefits. They would want to take this opportunity to impress their boss by showing loyalty to the organization and to the boss.
This is an ethically wrong act on part of the boss as well as the human resource manager, who instead of convincing the boss about why doing this is not a good idea, becomes party to the deceitful act. If I were I the place of human resource manager, I would tell my boss that rather than manipulating the information to show exaggerated value of benefits, we should communicate to the employees the ways how they can maximize and take full advantage of the benefits. As a human resource manager, we should view the employees as important human capital asset, and should make all efforts to increase their productivity, motivation, and job satisfaction level for mutually beneficial results.
