Question
Students and Social Change
College students have historically played a big role in driving change in society. In the 1960s, students protested U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. They started the free speech movement at U.C. Berkeley. Female students organized around women's rights. And students of color organized for civil rights. Now we see student activism on the rise again. Students are organizing around a vast array of issues, such as sexual assaults and hostile racial climates on campus.

(Answer) In the past, we have observed that college students have taken part in revolutionary activities. This participation is mostly because these students have had poor experiences first hand or that they have watched the people close to them being affected by the issue that they protest.
Bronfenbrenner explained that everything in a child’s environment is likely to affect how they grow and develop. He went on to explain that a child’s inherent qualities affect the social environment and vice-versa.
Bronfenbrenner’s biological model is in the form of concentric circles or levels that influence a child.
The first level – The Microsystem which is the child itself.
The second level – The Mesosystem which comprise of the family, school, playground, peers, religious institutions and healthcare systems.
The third level – The Ecosystem which contains the extended family, neighbours, friends of the family, legal services, social welfare services and the mass media.
The fourth level – The Macrosystem is formed by the attitudes and ideologies of the society.
The fifth level – The Chronosystem is formed by all of the events and transitions that occur within a child’s life.
Since childhood and even through adolescence, an individual’s mind is clearly influenced by the experiences they have through their environment. College students are simply the ones who repeatedly choose to act on these influences and participate to change scenarios that they feel are anti-social. This is how the society shapes the attitudes of college students.
