2. electrochemical cell is constructed of one half-cell in which an aluminum wire dips i an aqueous solution of An aluminum nitrate. The other half-cell consists of an inert platinum wire in an aqueous solution of Fe 3. a. What is the reaction occurring when this cell operates spontaneously? When the dissolved metal ions have a concentration of 1.0 M, what is Eo? c. If [Al's (aq)] 0.1 M and [Fe' (aq)] 0.25 M, the potential is found to be 2.41 V. What is the concentration of Fe 2 ions in solution?

Explanation / Answer

Electrochemical reaction

a. The reaction occuring when cell operates spontaneously

3Fe3+(aq) + Al(s) ---> 3Fe2+(aq) + Al3+(aq)

b. When the dissolved metal ion have a concentration of 1.0 M,

Eo = Ecathode - Eanode

      = 0.77 - (-1.66)

      = 2.43 V

c. Using Nernst equation,

Ecell = Eo - 0.0592/n logK

K = [Fe2+]^3.[Al3+]/[Fe3+]^2

we get,

Ecell = 2.41 V

Feeding the values,

2.41 = 2.43 - 0.0592/3 log([Fe2+]^3 x 0.1/(0.25)^3)

So concentration of [Fe2+] would be,

[Fe2+] = 2.53 M
