Inroganic chemsitry question--please only answer if you understand it and you can answer it ENTIRELY.Please do not answer this question if you cannot answer it all. I am looking for a long, detailed response.

B1) Examining the Spectrochemical Series & the Chelate Effect a) Use a volumetric flask to prepare 100.00 mL of a 0.10 MNi(NO302*6H20 aqueous solution b) Add 10 mL of the 0.10 M Ni(NO302*6H20 solution into four different small beakers Label each beaker as A, B, C, & D. Record the color of the solution in your notebook c) Add 1 mL of 6 MNH3 to the beaker labeled B and gently stir. Record your observations. d Add 1 mL of 30% ethylenediamine (en) to the beakers labeled C & D and gently stir. Record your observations. e) After you have added ethylenediamine to beaker D, add 1 mLof 6 M NH3. Note any changes. If no change occurs, document this as well obtain UV-Vis spectra for solutions A & C in the 350-800 nm range. It may be necessary to dilute solution Cif the absorbance is too high. If so, add 5 mLof Solution C to 15 mL of DI water and gently stir before recording a spectrum of the solution. Answer the questions that follow. 12. Record max and the absorbance at max for the solutions in A and C. Note that more than one ma may exist for each solution. Solution A Solution C ax Absorbance Absorbance 720 0.20 655 342 0.19 395 339

Explanation / Answer

Solution A has only hydrated nickel nitrate salt while the solution B has a complex formed after ethylenediamine was added to the beaker containing the hydrated nickel nitrate.

The experimental data shows that due to complexation (complex formation )in the solution B, high values of absorbance are depicted even at very low wavelengths. The higher the analyte concentration, the more light at a certain wavelength will be absorbed. Hence, this shows that due to the addition of ethylenediamine the concentration of solution B increased and gave an absorbance of 0.78 at 339nm itself while solution B gave an absorbance value of 0.48 at 395nm wavength.
