Discoveries in DNA, cell biology, evolution, biotechnology have been among the major achievements in biology over the past 200 years with accelerated discoveries and insights over the last 50 years. Consider the progress we have made in these areas of human knowledge. Present at least three of the discoveries you find to be most important and describe their significance to society, health, and the culture of modern life. Please decsribe in own words and not internet sources.
Explanation / Answer
1. restriction endonucleases: These enzymes play a vital role in the process of genetic engineering. In this process genetically modified organisms can be produced. crops resistant to pests can be produced. Insulin is also produced in this way. In modern life we find it easier if plants are resistant to pests.
2. DNA and RNA: These two are the main parts of a cell.DNA acts as the genetic material and carrier of genes from one generation to another. This discovery has helped us to identify diseases which are passed down through DNA. we can also identify whether the parents are carriers of some DNA borne disease. The genetic information is transcribed to RNA in the cell. This happens in all cells and gives an idea of how proteins are formed.
3. Role of microbes in disease: Louis Pasteur and Joseph Lister were two scientists who made big discoveries. Pasteur helped to discover causes of spoilage in milk and wine. He also discovered vaccines. Joseph lister was famous for the discovery that microbes can grow in wounds.
