Explanation / Answer

Here are the instructions:

Reaction

Separation:

Purification and Analysis:

1. Prepare a set-up for distillation using figure E7.

2. Distill the crude product when the temperature range is 136 oC and 143 oC.

3. Record the actual temperatures at each step. Wait till the temperature does not change anymore.

4. Stop heating when only a drop or so is remaining in the RB in set-up or when temperature reaches 143 oC.

5. Now, check for purity. Means if the distillate is cloudy, dry it using Na2SO4 or MgSO4.

6. Now, weigh the obtained product. This will be your yield.

7. Using a carbowax/another suitable column, you should obtain a gas chromatogram of the distillate.

8.Now, measure the peak areas in the chromatogram. 1st peak will be for isopentyl alcohol. 2nd peak will be for isopentyl acetate and 3rd will be for acetic acid.

9. Now, using the peak areas, calculate the % of each component in the distillate and calculate the % yield of isopentyl acetate using % in the distillate.

Have a nice day!! :)
