Question

A sample of Na2SO4(s) is dissolved in 232 g of water at 298 K such that the solution is 0.335 molar in Na2SO4. A temperature rise of 0.146 C is observed. The calorimeter constant is 330. JK1. the density of the solution can be approximated to be the density of pure water 1.00 g/mL.

1.Calculate the enthalpy of solution of Na2SO4 in water at this concentration.

I got -2430kJ/mol

2.Calculate the enthalpy of solution using the data in Table 4.1 in the textbook (Appendix B, Data Tables).

I got -2400kJ/mol

Both answers are correct

3. Compare your results and find the relative error.

I used (2430-2400) / 2400 * 100% = 1.3 % was wrong I dont know why how to get relative error in this question

Explanation / Answer

3.

the process that you have done is absolutely correct. But the wrong answer indicator may be due the calculation of percent error.

Relative error = |2400 - 2430| / 2400 = 0.0125

Percent of relative error = 0.0125 * 100 = 1.25 %

As in the question it is asked that to calculate the relative error only, please try with 0.0125.
