Can someone please help me answer these questions? Please explain how because I am really lost >_<
Write a paragraph of the required length to explain the mass spectrum of methylene chloride (CH2C12). More specifically, you should include the following items in your essay 1. Describe the difference between the base peak and the parent ion (or molecular ion peak. 2. Identify the base peak and the parent ion (or molecular ion) peak (if any) according to the mass spectrum. 3. Identify the mass fragments which correspond to m/z 9, 51, 84, 86 and 88 4. Give explanations for the magnitude (or intensity) of the peaks at m/z- 51, 86 and 88 in the mass spectrum. Use the following atomic masses when analyzing the mass spectrum 12C 12.00 amu; 35 37 1.00 amu CI 35.000 amu, and CI 37.000 amuExplanation / Answer
The molecular ion peak is m/z value corresponding molecular weight of the molecule with its less isotopic masses added for its constituent atoms. The base peak is most intense peak in a mass spectra, which may not be necessarily molecular ion peak. The base peak for methlene chloride is 49 and molecular ion peak is 84.
49 m/z value is corresponding to fragment with 35 amu chlorine atom and other chlorine atom has been lost.
51 m/z value is corresponding to fragment with 37 amu chlorine atom and other chlorine atom has been lost.
84 m/z value is corresponding to fragment with two 35 amu chlorine atoms.
86 m/z value is corresponding to fragment with one 35 amu and one 37 amu chlorine atoms.
88 m/z value is corresponding to fragment with two 37 amu chlorine atoms.
The intensity of 51 peak one-third of 49 peak because the isotopic abundance of 37Cl and 35 Cl are 76% and 24% respectively.
The intensities of 84, 86 and 88 peaks are in the ratio 9 : 6 : 1.
