Question
I just need to know how to find the % dissociation from a .5 M solution with the information I collected from the 2 dilutions. notebook, but be clear about which question you are answering. o copy the question into your l. Revisit Pre-Lab Question 3. Based on work done in this lab exercise, provide a critical evaluation of your predictions. Were your predictions c Use calculations to support your reasoning (for example, calculate the ociation for the 0.5 10x dilution, and 20x dilution for at least one of the acids).Explanation / Answer
For 0.5 M HCl ,10 x dilution
pH=1.35
So [H+]=10-1.35=0.04
Now we have data 18.02 ml H2O and 2.01 ml HCl
So M1V1=M2V2
2.01*0.5=20.03*M2
So [HCl]=M2=0.05 after dilution
So dissociation=[H+]/[HCl]=0.04/0.05=0.8
Means 80% dissociation
(2) 20 x dilution
pH=1.70
So [H+]=10-1.7=0.02
Now we have data 19 ml H2O and 0.90 ml HCl
So M1V1=M2V2
0.90*0.5=19.90*M2
So [HCl]=M2=0.022 after dilution
So dissociation=[H+]/[HCl]=0.02/0.022=0.9090
Means 90.90% dissociation
