Question

I saw a movie called “Red Belt” several years ago. This film focuses on one martial arts instructor’s goal to be true to himself and his students. His teachings were designed to protect the people and not spectacularize (is that a word) the art. In a bind for money, he agrees to fight in a Mixed Martial Arts competition. I don’t want to ruin the movie, so I’ll add my own ending with a question: If he is attacked on camera and defends himself with a single punch that, at first “knocks out”, but in reality kills his attacker, what do you do? How would you work the crime scene, explain your hypothesis as to what happened and how you would test your hypothesis and what kind of testing do you think would be useful?

Explanation / Answer

If his attacker was killed, there are two possibilities:

1. The instructor gave the knokout punch in an area which would be fatal.

2. The attacker may have been knocked out by the punch. Complications might have risen which would have ended with death.

To test the hypothesis, we need to check the autopsy report. We can check out the location of the blow and how deep the wound is. Also we can check out if any internal injuries are reported. If the location of the blow is a critical area then we can suspect the instructor.

IF the area of the blow is a normal one like hands and legs, then we can suspect other complications. The attacker may have hit his head on some hard surface during the fight. This may end up in cerebral haemorrhage.
