Question

Consider the following reaction that occurs between hydrochloride acid HCl and zinc metal HCl_(aq) + Zn(s) rightarrow H_2(g) + ZnCl_2(aq) Will this reaction occur fastest using a 6 M solution of HCl or a 0.5 M solution of HCL? Explain Again consider the reaction between hydrochloride acid and zinc. How will increasing the temperature affect the rate of the reaction? Explain. Based on the following kinetic energy curves, which reaction will have a faster rate - A or B? Explain. Also, which reaction. A of B. would benefit most in terms of increased rate if the temperature of the system were increased? Which of the following reactions will have the fastest rate? The slowest? Explain. 2C_12H_26(s) + 39 O_2(g) rightarrow 24 CO_2 (g) + 26 H_2O (g) S_2O_s^2 (aq) + 2 I (aq) rightarrow 2 SO_4^2 (aq) + I_2(s) Ba^2+ (aq) + SO_4^2 (aq) rightarrow BaSO_4(s) While phosphorus resets immediately and rapidly with oxygen when exposed to air. What can you say about the amount of activation energy required for this reaction?

Explanation / Answer

Zn + 2HCl ---> ZnCl2 + H2 + heat

1) The reaction with 6M Hcl is faster then with o.5 M HCl, as the increase in reactant concentration increases rate of reaction.

2) With increase in temperature , the reaction nbecomes slower as it is exothermic rection. Increase in temperature favours endothermic reaction.

3)Based on the curves B will have faster rate as more number of particles have energy closer to average kinetic energy.

When temperature is increased, A will have more effect (increase in temperature) as more molecules now possess higher kinetic energies.

4) IN general ionic reactions are faster and covalent reactions are slower.

Among the covalent reactions, the more is the number of bonds to be broken, less is the rate of reaction,

Thus rate of reaction are

rxn3 > rxn2 >rxn 1

The rxn 1 is ionic in which no covanet bonds are broken.

rxn 2 is ionic but some covalent bonds need to be broken.

Rxn 3 is completely covalent where a number of bonds are broken.

5) white P undergoes spontaneous and immediate reaction with air.

It suggests that the activation energy of this reaction is very small.
