Question

Please answer the question FULLY otherwise I will not get the full marks. Thank you.

Three potential drug molecules have recently been developed. They have been shown to be biologically active at the adrenergic receptors, either as agonists or as antagonists. The selectivity of these molecules towards the adrenergic receptor subtypes alpha, beta_1 and beta_2 varies for each of these potential drugs. Compound A-weak alpha agonist, strong beta_1 antagonist and weak beta_2 antagonist Compound weak alpha antagonist, weak beta_1 agonist and weak beta_2 antagonist Compound C-strong a agonist, strong beta_1 agonist and strong beta_2 agonist The following table show the locations of the adrenergic receptors throughout the body as well as a brief summary of the physiological effects observed when these receptors are activated. Using the table above, fully rationalise which, if any, of the three drugs would be the most useful for the prevention of heart attacks, and which, if any, would be the most useful for the treatment/prevention of asthma. Remember to think about any potential side effects the compounds may promote.

Explanation / Answer

Solution:

Among the given compunds A,B and C, the compound C is the suitable drug molecule for prevention of heart attacks as beta-1 antagonist is stronger to prevention heart attacks and beta-2 favours the relaxation of blood vessels and air pathway and it had one major side effect an increased blood pressure which is not suitable for heart patients. The molecule C can be administered only by strict followup of diet guidelines for the patients by avoidance of spicy and greasy food for reducing the chance of side effects. In addition to it compound A can also be preferred for treating heart attacks and been advised to practise an redular warmup exercise (simple one like walking) for strngthening of the blood vessels as beta 2 in drug is weaker compared to C but A had minimal side effects on comparison.

For asthma condition compound C is preferred as it helps in achieving air passage relaxation along with soothening of blood vessels an ideal for asthnmatic condition, its side effect can be prevented by avoidance to allergenic substances like pollution, pollens etc..,
