Question
Check all of the boxes under View in the Two Atoms tab. Experiment with changing me electronegativities of the two atoms and observe the effect on the bond dipole, partial charges and bond character. 1. How does electronegativity affect the bond dipole? 2.. How does electronegativity affect the partial charges on the atoms? 3. How does electronegativity effect whether the bond is covalent or ionic? Select the Three Atoms tab. Check all of the boxes under View. Experiment with changing me electronegativities and positions of the three atoms and observe the effect on the bond dipole. partial charges, and molecule dipole. 4. Explain any new ways to change the molecule polarity of the three-atom molecule. 5. How does the ABC-bond angle affect molecule polarity? Tip: Try changing the bond angle in the simulation. 6. Explain the relationship between the bond dipoles and the molecule dipole. 7. Can a non-polar molecule contain polar bonds?Explanation / Answer
Part 1
Electronegativity is the tendency of an atom to attract shared electron pair towards itself.
1) dipole moment of a bond arises due to the difference in the electronegativity of the participated atoms and higher is the electronegativity difference higher becomes the bond dipole.
2) The atom with higher electronegativity has a greater tendency to attract the shared electron pair towards itself and hence the shared electron pair remain more towards the more electronegative atoms, thereby gets a partial negative charge and the other atom gets a partial positive charge.
3) More is the displacement of the shared electron pair from their equilibrium position towrds more electronegative atom, more becomes the ionic character.
