Its Genral Chemistry for Engineers
SHOW YOUR WORK VERY,VERY CLEARLY 1. Balance the following equations: a) Pb02 + HCl H2O + PbCl2 + Ch 2. Caustic soda (NaOH) is prepared commercially by passing and electric current through a concentrated solution of salt water 2NaCI(aq) + 2H2O 2NaOH(aq) + H2(g) + Cl a) What is the theoretical yield of caustic soda if 100 kg of sodium chloride is electrolyzed? What is the percent yield if the electrolysis produces 55 kg of caustic soda? Calcium carbonate dissolves in hydrochloric acid according to the equation: acots) + 2HCI(aq) How many grams of calcium chloride will form if 50.00 g of CaCO, is mixed with 0 500 b) 3. CaC12(aq) + H2O + CO2 mole of HCI? 4. A 0.1888-g sample of a hydrocarbon produces 06260 g CO, and 0.1602 g H-O in combustion analysis. Its molecular mass is found to be 106 gimol. For this hydrocarbon. determine a) its empirical formula and b) its molecular formula. 5. What is the molarity of the following solutes? a) sucrose (CisHz0s) if 100.0 g are dissolved in 500 mL of water, b) urea (CONHh if 87.8 mg of the 98.7 % pure solid are dissolved in 5.00 mL of aqueous solution. Twenty-five mL of 0.388 M solution of NaSO, is mixed with 35.3 mL of 0.229 M Na2SO4 What is molarity of the resulting solution. Assume that the volumes are additive 6.

Explanation / Answer

Question 1

Balanced equation:
PbO2 + 4 HCl ====> 2 H2O + PbCl2 + Cl2

Balanced equation:
2 C2H6S + 9 O2 ===> 4 CO2 + 2 SO2 + 6 H2O

Balanced equation:
La2(CO3)3 + 3 H2SO4 ===> La2(SO4)3 + 3 H2O + 3 CO2

Question 2

Balanced equation:
2 NaCl + 2 H2O = 2 NaOH + H2 + Cl2

100 Kg of NaCl = 100 x 103 / 58.45 =  1711.07 Moles

according to the above equation the same moles of NaOH will be produced

Moles NaOH to be produced = 1711.07 Moles

Thoertical Mass of NaOH = 1711.07 x 40 = 68438.08 gm or 68.438 Kg

Percentage yield = Observed yield x 100 / Thoretical yield

Percentage yield = 55 x 100 / 68.438 =   80.36 %
