Question

QUESTION 2 Identify the most acidic compound in solution and the correct explanation for why it is the most acidic of the group. OH OH O 1 is the most acidic due to its interactions with the solvent. O2 is the most acidic because it is a tertiary alcohol O 3 is the most acidic, the -OH group is furthest from the ring O You cannot tell which is more acidic, they are all alcohols. QUESTION 3 Identify the most acidic compound and the correct explanation for why it is the most acidic of the group OH OH 3 is the most acidic, it has the greatest pha. O 3 is the most acidic, it has the lowest pKa. O 1 is the most acidic, it has the highest pKa O 1 is the most acidic, it has the most stable conjugate base

Explanation / Answer

Question 2

Answer: 1 is the most acidic, it has the most stable conjugate base.

Stronger the conjugate base weaker the acid & weaker the conjugate base stronger the acid.

1 is primary alochol & it has weak conjugate base hence it is most acidic.

The alkyl group attached to the OH group are electron donating (positive inductive effect) this destabilizes the corrosponding conjugate base. Also the increase in branching increases the stearic effect which prevents the solvation of conjugate base.

Hence tertiary aloohol are weak acid & primary alcohol is most acidic. secondary alcohol fall inbetween these two.

Question 3

Answer: 3 is the most acidic, it has the lowest pKa

3 is a carboxylic acid & carboxylic acids are most acidic among the organic compounds.

The resonance stabilization of the carboxylate anion by the two electronigative oxygens of the carboxylic acid makes the carboxylic acid more acidic than the alcohols which have only one oxygen.

No such stabilization of the corrosponding anion is possible in case of alkanes (2). Hence they are not acidic.

Lower the pKa higher is the acidity.
