Number of moles of vanillin added to the reaction. 14.vostm nf moles of triethylamine added to the reaction.Explanation / Answer
The reaction that takes place in the synthesis of DVO is,
2 Vanillin+ (COCl2)(oxalyl chloride)+(triethylamine) (Et3N) ----> DVO [see image]
In this synthesis ,mol of vanillin used=0.0051 mol
mol of oxalyl chloride used=0.00064 mol
2(mol of vanillin) reacts with 1 (mol of oxalyl chloride),So ,0.00264 mol*2=0.00528 mol of vanillin is needed to react with the given mol of oxalyl chloride .But mol of vanillin used (=0.0051 mol) is much lower than this value ,so vanllin is the limiting reagent in the given synthesis.
Thus , 2(mol of vanillin) reacts with 1 mol of oxalyl chloride to form 1 mol of DVO
So,0.0051 mol of vanillin reacts to form (1/2 *0.0051=0.00255) mol of DVO
Theoretical mass of DVO to be formed=0.00255 mol of DVO * molar mass of DVO=0.00255 mol* 238.152 g/mol=0.607g
[molar mass of vanillin=152.15 g/mol
molar mass of oxalte =88.018 g/mol
molar mass of DVO=152.15 g/mol+88.018 g/mol-2*1.008 g(-2H or mass of 2H)=238.152 g/mol]
experimental yield of DVO==0.728g
percent yield=experimental yield/theoretical yield * 100%=0.728/0.607*100=119.9%
