After a brief visit, a person in canoe 1 pushes on canoe 2 to separate the canoes. Suppose the speeds of the two canoes after they are pushed apart are 0.65 m/s for canoe 1 and 0.49 m/s for canoe 2 If the mass of canoe 1 is 310 kg, what is the mass of canoe 2? Express your answer using two significant figures no ate oe kg Submit My Answers Give Up we he al mon y con vl+ -0.62 . -393 wer: 3 mment

Explanation / Answer

we need to use conservation of momentum

initially, both canoe are at rest.

So, initial momentum = 0

so, final momentum should also be 0

m1 = 310 Kg

V1 = 0.65 m/s

V2 = -0.49 m/s (negative because they must move in opposite direction)

use:

final momentum = m1*V1 + m2*V2

0 = 310*0.65 + m2*(-0.49)

0.49*m2 = 201.5

m2 = 411 Kg

Answer: 411 Kg
