Question
An apparatus to be used in a decomposition study was filled with N2 gas at
400.0 mmHg and 400.0 deg C. The volume of the apparatus was 400.0 mL.
a. What mass of N2 was in the apparatus? Calculator answer is
0.1067633. (9 pt)
b. The apparatus was then heated to 1200.0 deg C. If the volume of the
apparatus could not change, what would be the pressure of the N2 at that
temperature? Calculator answer is 875.3769591. (9 pt)
I know how to get the answer for A, so you can just put the work for B.
Explanation / Answer
b) Mathematical Work for B:
An apparatus that used in a decomposition study was filled with N2 gas at 400.0 mmHg and 400.0 deg C.
Lets assume P1= 400.0 mmHg and T1=400.0 deg C=673K
Now if the apparatus was heated to 1200.0 deg C means final temp T2=(1200+273)K=1473K
by using the Gas laws, P1/T1=P2/T2 lets assume P2 is the final pressure
So, the pressure of the N2 at that temperature, P2= P1T2/T1 = 400mm * 1473K / 673K
= 875.3769591 mm Hg
