Question

In the figure below, the two gray circles have a diameter of approximately 2.0 cm and are separated by a distance of approximately 6.5 cm. The gray circles represent two conducting disks on a flat surface. The black lines represent wires connecting a 9.0 Volt battery to the conducting circles.

  (a) Label each circle with the potential acquired by it from the battery. Remember the units.

  (b) Draw the anticipated charge distribution on the circles using plus (+) for positive charge and minus (-) for negative charge.

  (c) What would be the potential (numerical value) at the mid-point between the two conducting circles?

(d) Show the direction of the electric field at the mid-point with an arrow.

  (e) Draw an equipotential line that goes through the mid-point. Use a dashed line (--------) to distinguish it from the electric field arrow.

+9.0 V

Explanation / Answer

as the battery is attached to both of the discs, the potentials appearing on their surfaces will be the potential difference of the battery.

disc on the left hand side will gain the positive potential while disc at right will gain the negative potential.

if the charge on left disc is +9 C then-

q/A = 28647 C/m2

at mid point potential will be 4.5 volt.
