Question

Please solve this problem 33. The diagram shows the arrangement of the outer electrons only in a molecule of ethanoic acid. 0 a. Name the different elements found in this compound? b. What is the total number of atoms present in this molecule? c. Between which two atoms is there a double covalent bond? d. How many covalent bonds does each carbon atom make? e. Would you expect this compound to be a solid or a liquid at room temperature? Give reason for your answer? f. Ethanoic acid will dissolve in methylbenzene, would you expect this solution to conduct electricity? Give reason for your answer?

Explanation / Answer

Ans 33 :

a) The different elements present in this compound are : Carbon , hydrogen and oxygen .

b) The total number of electrons in the molecule can be calculated by the sum total of different electrons present in each of its constituent element.

So the total electrons are : 24

c) The double bond exists between the carbon and oxygen atom in the molecule.

d) There are two carbon atoms in the molecule. Each carbon atom makes 4 covelent bonds with the other atom , to complete its octet.

e) The compound exists as liquid at room temperature. This is because the molecules make hydrogen bonds with the neighbouring ethanoic acid molecules , due to which more amount of energy is required to break the bonds and exist in gaseous state.

f) No the solution does not conduct electricity. The solution conducts electricity if the molecule breaks into its constituent ions. Since here the ethanoic acid only dissolves in methylbenzene (toluene) and does not dissociate into ions , it does not conduct electricity.

The molecule rather becomes conductivity when dissolved in water.
