Question

Imagine for this question that the community we’re dealing with is a CALIFORNIA plant community with a Mediterranean-climate dominated by woody species. Reflect on general ecological dynamics for this community. If you were a Reserve Manager, you might be charged with enhancing the populations of any of these species. Under what physical and/or biotic conditions would a Species dominate this community? How would conditions have to change for a certain Species to become the dominant? Under what conditions might a Species move into dominance?

Explanation / Answer

The climate of Mediterranean is characterized by warm to hot. This area has dry summers and mild to cool winters. This area is also called “Garden of the world”.

The biome of this area is associated with the climatic conditions and is fresh water communities. The native vegetation is adapted to survive long, hot summer droughts, and prolonged wet periods in winter.

Thus, the species that is able to tolerate hot summer droughts, and prolonged wet periods in winter can dominate this community. The tolerating capacity and adaptations of species in accordance to the climate of the community helps it to move into dominance.
