Question
In the IR spectrum for Heptanedioic acid ( COHC=OCH2CH2CH2CH2CH2C=OCOH ) there is a peak that appears between 3400-2400 cm and another at 1700 cm. What functional group gives rise to each of these peaks?
a. sp2 Carbon-hydrogen stretch
b. Carbon-oxygen double bond stretch of the carbonyl group of the diacid.
c. Carbon-oxygen single bond stretch.
d. Oxygen-hydrogen stretch of the hydroxyl group of the diacid.
I think the peak around 3000 is the OH stretch (d) and the one at 1700 is the C=O (b), but have not had an easy time interpreting IR sprectrums and would appreciate some confirmation/clarification. THank you :)
Explanation / Answer
3400-2400 cm-1 ---> is the OH stretch
d is the answer
1700 cm-1 ---> is for C=O groups
b is the answer.
