Please help! I would really like to understand this question. Can you please include an explanation to better understand thank you!

A population of cells was synchronized so that they would all start at phase G1 of the cell cycle. Questions 1-4 are polyacrylamide gels showing protein from cells taken at successive time intervals over the course of a single round through the cell cycle, starting in G1. Suggest which of the following proteins is being shown by each blot. A G1/S-phase syclin B. Cdki D. M-phase sclin E. S-phase scin Increasing Time G1 1. 2. 3. 4.

Explanation / Answer

The cell cycle progression occurs as G1-S-G2-M, then again G1 (in the daughter cell). Cyclins are phase specific in nature. For example- S-phase cyclin-Cdk complex is required for DNA replication; so S-phase cyclin is produced during that phase; once the cell enters the G2 phase, the S-phase cyclins will be degraded (mainly by ubiquitin-tagged proteolysis).

Hence, 1 - S-phase cyclin

2- Cdk1

3- G1/S-phase cyclin

4- M-phase cyclin
