Question
Indicate whether following mutant alleles are likely to be weak or strong based on the nature and location of each mutation:
A) SNP in the second intron
B) Transposon insertion in the 3' UTR
C) Missense mutation in a variable region of the gene that is NOT conserved between related organisms
D) Nonsense mutation in the first exon
E) Deletion of 1 base pair just downstream of the start codon
F) Deletion of the promoter
G) Frameshift mutation in the middle of a agene
H) Temperature-sensitive mutation
Side note: It'd be great if a little explanation was included so I could understand why it was weak or strong.
Thank you!
Explanation / Answer
A) Association between a rare SNP in the second intron of human Agouti related. Three polymorphisms were identified: silent mutation c.123G>A (rs34123523) ... Y (NPY), also a strong mediator of regulation of energy balance.
B) The transposon insertion is associated with increased transcript abundance of within the 3 UTR of the upstream predicted gene CG8447; mutation only tangentially conferring weak cross-resistance to DDT.
c) We found a strong genetic interaction between mutations in these genes .The sha gene encodes a 179-kDa protein that is conserved in other insects. Sha proteins surrounding the regions where the three missense mutations are located. weak similarity to a number of proteins in more distantly related organisms.
D) The phenomenon of NMD was first described in human cells and in yeast .The substitution was localized in exon 3 and nonsense mutation at codon 68.
