Question

Please I would appreciate it if I get help on all 4 questions.

1) Determine the charge on the

hexacyanoferrate(II) ion

2)Enter the formula of

Tetracarbonylnickel(0)

Use square brackets, "[" and "]", to indicate the coordination sphere.

For example, you would write Sodium Tetrachlorooxomolybdate(IV) as Na2[MoOCl4]

3) Enter the formula of

Mercury(II) tetrathiocyanatocobaltate(II)

Use square brackets, "[" and "]", to indicate the coordination sphere.

For example, you would write Sodium Tetrachlorooxomolybdate(IV) as Na2[MoOCl4]

4)The ion [Ru(CN)6]3- has one unpaired electron. [Ru(H2O)6]3+ has five unpaired electrons. Based on these results

A-Is [Ru(CN)6]3- high spin or low spin?

B-Is [Ru(H2O)6]3+ high spin or low spin?

C-Which ligand in the spectrochemical series would H2O most closely resemble? F-or en or NO2-

Explanation / Answer

1) [Fe(CN)6]4-

The charge of this ion is -4. Fe has +2 charge and CN has -1 charge. So total charge will be 2+(-1x6) = -4.

2) Formula of Tetracarbonylnickel(0) - [Ni(CO)4]

3) Formula of Mercury(II) tetrathiocyanatocobaltate(II) - Mg[Co(SCN)4]

`4) A) [Ru(CN)6]3- is low spin. Ru is in +3 oxidation state (d5) and only one unpaired electron is there. Also, CN- is a strong ligand. So the configuration should be t2g5 eg0.

B) [Ru(H2O)6]3+ is high spin. Ru is in +3 oxidation state (d5) and five unpaired electrons are there. Also, H2O is a weak ligand. So the configuration should be t2g3 eg2.

C) H2O closely resembles F- in the spectrochemical series.
