Mr. Eisner, age 43, sustained severe burns while welding a gasoline tank that he had removed from a truck. He had full-thickness burns on his face and bald head and on both of his arms and hands – as well as a mixture of superficial and deep partial-thickness burns on his anterior trunk. His genital area, lower extremities, and posterior body were not burned.

After assessment and emergency stabilization, Mr. Eisner was transported to a regional burn center for care.

5. If he develops hypovolemia, should he be expected to have concurrent edema?   Explain and justify your answer, please.

Explanation / Answer

Hypovolemia is a stage when there is decrease in volume of blood plasma. If there is delay of more than 2 hrs after hypovolemia then there are more possibilities of developing edema because of of excessive resuscitation and fluid overload. Edema is a condition of swelling of skin and filled with fluid or a kind of skinn vesicle formation.
